The IHSFC, was established in 2007 to provide tools and approaches
that facilitate translational studies, as well as to enhance partnerships
among researchers, Medical Center units such as the URMC's Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and community-based organizations that
impact the conduct of clinical and public health research. The IHSFC is
designed to assist basic science investigators in moving their research
in the direction of clinical/translational studies through the use of
appropriate animal models of disease, human tissues, or direct clinical
and public health applications. In addition, the IHSFC also provides
clinical scientists with a means to refine questions and approaches to
mechanisms, develop more relevant animal models, and increase treatment
specificity and efficacy. The IHSFC operates through face-to-face contacts with faculty and the IHSFC steering committee. Faculty who are interested in utilizing the services of the IHSFC should contact the IHSFC steering committee at EHSC_IHSFC@URMC.ROCHESTER.EDU Steering Committee Members
Projects facilitated by the IHSFCThe IHSFC steering committee assisted Dr. Marc Williams in writing a successful application to the Research Subjects Review Board for a project investigating the effects of allergens and particulate matter on peripheral blood dendritic cells. As of Dec 2008, the study has recruited 12 human subjects and generated preliminary data for a successful research grant from the Health Effects Institute. The IHSFC steering committee assisted Dr. Irfan Rahman in writing a successful application to the Research Subjects Review Board for a pilot study investigating biomarkers of lung inflammation in smoking and non-smoking subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Translational Services staff worked with Dr. Rahman to develop strategies for subject recruitment and retention. As of December 2008, the study enrolled 24 smoking and non-smoking subjects. |
