Application Procedures

Applications will be requested twice throughout the year, and the application process will now be conducted in two stages. Initial applications will consist of a one-page abstract describing the goals and objectives of the proposed project, the relevance to the mission of the EHSC, and the investigators involved. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Internal Advisory Committee and they will determine those applicants who are selected to submit full applications.

In writing proposals, please keep in mind that these are read by a faculty committee selected from a broad range of backgrounds and thus not all members are specialists in the particular field of the proposal. Proposal application kits may be obtained from this website or by contacting Pat Noonan by telephone (275-3265) or by e-mail (Patricia_Noonan@urmc.rochester.edu).
In accordance with the kit provided, the body of the application should include:

  1. A 3-4 page research plan following the NIH guidelines outlined below. Proposals exceeding the space limitations will not be accepted.

    1. Objective- state the overall objective or long-term goal of the proposed research as it relates to one or more of the three research core areas of the Center.

    2. Background and Rationale- review the most significant previous work and describe the current status of research, including your own in this field. Present concisely the justification for your approach to the problem, if it is not obvious from the preceding material. When you are choosing one of the several possible approaches, note briefly why the others have been rejected.

    3. Methods- describe the methods to be used.

    4. Significance- discuss the potential importance of the proposed work and any novel ideas or contributions in terms of environmental health hazards. Discuss consistency of the proposal with the mission and objectives of the Center.

    5. Facilities Available and Service Cores to be Used- if you are planning to use Center Facility Cores, discuss the nature and extent of such use. It is recommended that you discuss your project in advance with the Facility Core Director to ensure that the Core will be able to provide the necessary service.

    6. Collaborative Arrangements- indicate any current Center members involved as collaborators in the project. If the proposed project requires collaboration with other institutions, community organizations, or any group whose cooperation is essential, describe this collaboration and provide evidence to assure the reviewers that those involved agree.

  2. A budget including a brief budget justification. Equipment and travel costs are not typically supported by pilot project funds.

  3. A Biographical Sketch for all key professional personnel as well as a complete list of current and pending funding, including project title, source, amount and period of funding. If the proposed project is being partially supported by other sources, please specify source and amount of support.

  4. Other support listing current and pending support in NIH format.

  5. A copy of the UCAR approval or pending review letter.

  6. A University of Rochester Sign-Off form with appropriate signatures only.
Submit the original and 8 copies of the application to Pat Noonan, Box EHSC.
