Toxicology Student Retreat, June 5, 2004

The Third Annual Student Retreat for graduate students in toxicology was held on Friday, June 5, 2004. Five students were honored for their performance.

   *Geniece McCollum won the William F. Neuman Award “…for the student who best exemplifies the academic, scientific, and personal qualities that were characteristic of the life of Dr. William F. Neuman.”

   *The Kodak Award for Excellence was won by Rosemarie Marchan.

   *Two students shared the Robert Infurna award: Christine Palermo and Jason Roper tied for the best research paper as first author in a peer-reviewed journal. (See Palermo and Roper)

   *Gary Minsavage won the Harold Hodge Award
“…for the student who has done especially meritorious research in toxicology and who had the best toxicology graduate thesis.”

Alumnus Patrick J. Wier (UR PhD, 1985), delivered the keynote address on “Applications of molecular biology in drug development: Predicting and understanding drug teratogenicity.” Wier is now Vice-President for Safety Assessment, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals.

   
A student poster session was held in the morning. First-year student Heather Ferguson discussed her research with interested visitor.
